Roof replacement at Grade II listed school preserving historic character and fabric.
YMD Boon was appointed by Queen Elizabeth Grammar School to deliver the replacement of the existing roof at The Old School House in Alford, Lincolnshire. The Grade II listed building, dating back to 1881 with early 20th century additions, required a sensitive and carefully considered approach.
Our funding specialists successfully secured Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) support through a detailed submission to the Department for Education. This was underpinned by comprehensive condition surveys, structural investigations, and feasibility studies, which confirmed that full roof replacement was the only viable solution.
Following funding approval, YMD Boon managed the project through to completion. Works involved the careful stripping and renewal of the roof, ensuring full compliance with heritage requirements. Scaffolding was specifically designed to enable the school to remain fully operational throughout the construction period.
All leadwork to abutments and the bellcote was renewed in keeping with the building’s historic character. The bellcote itself was fully refurbished, preserving its significance while restoring structural integrity. Existing tiles were reused wherever possible, with new tiles carefully matched in size and colour. The distinctive diamond pattern with fishtail tiles was fully reinstated, maintaining the building’s historic appearance.
We have a number of listed buildings on site, and YMD Boon’s expertise and knowledge of the challenges and regulations concerning older buildings was outstanding and helped move the projects along smoothly and within budget and on time. They consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, dedication, and a strong work ethic. We would highly recommend them to other schools.
