Refurbishment and fabric upgrade of Nottingham Trent University's Bonington Building to enhance performance and longevity.
YMD Boon was appointed by Nottingham Trent University to provide architectural services for the refurbishment and fabric upgrade of the Bonington Building at the City Campus. The project includes the replacement of existing windows, renewal of the main and atrium roofs, and façade improvements to enhance thermal performance, alongside refurbishment of all internally affected areas.
We worked closely with the University to identify and commission the necessary surveys to inform the proposals, including detailed condition assessments supported by drone footage to review hard-to-access roof areas. In collaboration with the cost manager, we developed and tested feasibility options to ensure the preferred solution was robust, future-proofed, and aligned with the allocated budget.
As the building remains operational throughout the programme, a carefully phased delivery strategy was agreed. The majority of disruptive works are scheduled during holiday periods to minimise impact on teaching, exhibitions, and day-to-day campus activity, ensuring continuity for students, staff, and visitors.
