Digital Hubs & IoT Centres

The East Midlands Institute of Technology at University of Derby integrated advanced technology with flexible layouts, creating future-proofed spaces that enabled the University to stay at the forefront of digital learning and experimentation.
Teaching Labs & Spaces
Our team transforms teaching labs and learning spaces to enhance functionality, safety, and engagement. By combining practical design with smart layouts, we have successfully refurbished Nottingham Trent University’s Bioscience Tissue Culture Labs, which converted the existing teaching spaces into cutting-edge medical facilities, and refurbished and upgraded University of Derby’s laboratories and teaching spaces.
Campus Improvements
We optimise campus infrastructure through strategic improvements, including refurbishments, upgrades, and estate-wide planning. Our approach focuses on enhancing efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability while creating welcoming, well-connected spaces that meet the evolving needs of students, staff, and the wider university community.
Student Accommodation
We design modern, comfortable, and safe student accommodation that supports wellbeing, community, and academic success. By maximising space, functionality, and sustainability, our University of London Student Accommodation concepts provided living environments that meet the expectations of today’s students while remaining adaptable for future needs.
Research Institutes
Our expertise in research institute projects combines rigorous technical standards with innovative, flexible design. The Hybrid Propulsion Systems Lab for University of Nottingham creates facilities that will allow industrial partners to safely research and test at high power propulsion systems for transport industries in aerospace, marine, automotive, and off-highway.
Listed Buildings
We provide sensitive, informed solutions for listed and heritage buildings within higher education estates. Our approach to converting the Grade II Listed Building into a Ceremonial Hall at Nottingham Trent University carefully balances preservation with functionality, delivering sensitive refurbishments and upgrades that honour its historic character while meeting operational needs.

YMD Boon’s careful approach to developing the brief by involving many stakeholders with different objectives has been central to making this a successful project. Keeping so many high-profile stakeholders on board whilst carefully detailing works to a listed structure and keeping within budget has been an impressive feat. I can think of few architectural practices that could have managed such a complex project so well and I think this demonstrates the multi-disciplinary approach to their work.
