New Science Building

YMD Boon were appointed to provide multi-disciplinary services for the replacement of Wigston Academy’s deteriorating science block, which had been taken out of use due to its poor condition. The lack of practical science teaching facilities had begun to affect student attainment, prompting the need for a complete rebuild.

Our Building Surveying team prepared and submitted a successful Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) bid to the Department for Education, securing £1.5 million in funding. The submission was supported by detailed condition surveys, structural investigations, and feasibility studies, which demonstrated that replacement was the only viable solution.

Following funding approval, YMD Boon provided full multi-disciplinary services including Lead Designer, Principal Designer, Contract Administrator, and Project Manager roles. The new building will provide two science laboratories, two classrooms, and a range of ancillary spaces including prep rooms and offices.

We worked closely with the client and planning authority to resolve challenges around tree preservation orders and site boundaries, ensuring the design complemented the existing campus layout. During construction, we implemented phased delivery to minimise disruption to teaching and exams, maintaining full safeguarding compliance and regular site supervision.
