Secondary Alternative Provision School

YMD Boon was appointed by Great Schools Trust to design and deliver the transformation of an existing office building into King’s Leadership Academy Phoenix, a new secondary alternative provision (AP) school in Wavertree, Liverpool. The new facility provides high-quality learning environments for pupils with SEND and specialist support needs across the city.

The school includes a range of specialist teaching spaces such as ICT suites, science laboratories, food technology and art classrooms, alongside therapy and counselling rooms designed to support student wellbeing. To promote active learning and recreation, the external areas include a MUGA, secure breakout spaces, and both hard and soft landscaped play zones.

The design process was driven by a deep understanding of the specific needs of the students and staff. Careful consideration was given to room layouts, accessibility, and the integration of specialist equipment. Safety and security were paramount, with comprehensive CCTV, access control systems, and a secure perimeter with controlled vehicle and pedestrian entry points.

In planning for the future, the upper floor layout was designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for potential expansion as the school grows. The completed design provides a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment that supports the educational and therapeutic needs of its pupils, helping the Trust continue its mission to deliver outstanding opportunities for every learner.
