YMD Boon was appointed by Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service (LFRS) to deliver a full refurbishment and internal reconfiguration of Western Fire Station, addressing equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I), improving segregation between clean and dirty areas, and enhancing the internal environment for staff and visitors.
From the outset, we engaged proactively with the client to understand the brief, commission surveys, and assemble a specialist consultant team. A feasibility study and options appraisal were prepared for stakeholder consideration, with progress regularly reported at board meetings. Our Quantity Surveyor provided cost estimates throughout RIBA stages, ensuring the final design remained within budget. We coordinated sub-consultant packages, liaised with the Building Control Officer, and facilitated M&E and IT workshops to capture requirements prior to tender.
The works were carried out while maintaining operational functionality. Phased construction, temporary accommodations including bunkabins, and careful relocation of key areas such as the watch room and radio systems ensured minimal disruption to emergency services.
The project included internal reconfiguration, new wet rooms and accessible WCs, kitchen refurbishment, internal M&E alterations including a full electrical rewire, and redecoration throughout. External works comprised roof replacements, new doors and windows to the community room, redecoration of access gates, and a new canopy. Coordination of services maintained uninterrupted water, power, and 2-minute callout times for emergency vehicles.
Building on this successful partnership, YMD Boon has delivered similar works at Eastern Fire Station and is currently managing projects at Southern Station, Central Fire Station, and the Billesdon Training Facility.
